These baseboard heat registers are also known as gravity registers because they were originally used with central gravity furnaces. In most old homes, the original gravity furnaces have been replaced with modern efficient forced-air heating and cooling systems but the old worn baseboard registers remain in place. Replacing the large ductwork that accompanied gravity furnaces requires a major renovation.
