High Tank Toilets
Antique Toilets: The History of the Toilet has its Highs and Lows
Although it is debatable whether Thomas Crapper actually invented the flush toilet, there is no question that he was primarily responsible for its mass adoption in the early 1900’s. Known as high tank toilets, Thomas Crapper’s design, as well as the design of other manufactures of the day, had the toilet tank mounted on the wall above the set. These early toilets were also known as pull chain toilets for the “pull chain” that was used to trigger the flush mechanism. By the late 1920’s advancements in plumbing technology brought about the modern low tank toilet, which quickly became the new standard.
