Counter to the drive towards mass-produced products of the day, the Arts and Crafts movement called for a return to craftsmanship and quality design. Distinctive hardware and furnishings resulted from this return to handcraftsmanship. Craftsman hardware items, such as door and cabinet hardware, took on an unrefined and at times medieval appearance. Rather than the then popular lustrous brass and nickel finishes, Arts & Crafts hardware was constructed from earthy metals like copper, bronze, and iron.
