Modern Freestanding Bath Tubs
Freestanding cast iron clawfoot and later pedestal tubs were popular fixtures in baths from the period that began with the outset of the wide introduction of modern indoor plumbing in the late 1800s through the first half of the 1900s. The popularity of drop-in cast iron bath tubs essentially brought an end to the sale freestanding clawfoot and pedestal tub sales by the mid-1900s.
Over a half-century later, modern versions of freestanding tubs have reemerged as a popular design option. Just like the originals, most modern freestanding tubs are constructed of cast iron with porcelain interiors but durable acrylic freestanding tubs are also available. Inspired by classic clawfoot tubs of the past, many modern freestanding bath tubs rest on four feet. However, modern tub feet are sleek and contemporary styled rather than the highly embellished and fanciful ball and claw feet of the past. Many modern styles of freestanding tubs, however, do not have feet. These tubs rest on handsome wooden blocks, on plinths, or directly on the floor.
